A kada (Punjabi: ਕੜਾ (Gurmukhi)) is an all-iron i.e., cast iron (sarb loh) bracelet worn by Sikhs. Most modern kadas have various designs engraved on them, which add to their appearance. Apart from coming in various designs, Karas come in several popular metals such as iron, steel, silver etc.
The Kara or Kada tapers to a slight point and is one of the most traditional styles to be found. The Kara is generally worn on the right wrist. It is in the shape of a circle which has no beginning and no end eternal like God.
Kara one of the five kakars or five Ks Which are external articles of faith, that identify a Sikh as dedicated to their religious practice. The kada was instituted by the tenth Sikh guru Sri Gobind Singh Ji at the Baisakhi Amrit Sanchar in 1699.
The Kara represents unbreakable attachment and commitment to God. It is symbol of restraint and gentility.
The Kara is to constantly remind the
Sikh to always remember that whatever he or she does with their hands has to be
in keeping with the advice given by the Guru to perform good deeds. The Kara is
a constant reminder of the Sikh's mission on this earth and that he or she must
carry out righteous and true deeds and actions in keeping with Gurbani.
